The MCA is saddened to learn of the death of Simon Phillips, who passed away this morning after a long illness.
A Life Member of the MCA, Simon was a dynamic figure in the revival of the Association in the 1990s after it had shrunk to two grades in the late 1980s. Serving as Secretary for 11 years, Simon initiated the vigorous recruitment and training of umpires, the recruitment of new clubs, the use of covers (Melbourne's first suburban comp to do so), and the creation of the MCA Umpires Association. He was made a life member of the MCA in 2004 and the D Grade shield is named in honour of his work.
As a player, Simon was a stalwart of Gunbower United Cricket Club, beginning with them on the mats in 1974 and playing his last game in 2007. A dogged and very correct opening batsman, Simon captained Gunbower's First XI for two seasons, including the B Grade premiership in 1992-93.
Players and umpires in this weekend's finals are asked to observe a minute's silence before their games as a mark of respect for Simon and his enormous contribution to the MCA.
